Metal Detectorist's Code of Ethics

•I will carry out my responsibility to know the law with regard to my hobby, be they local, county, state, or federal.

•I will respect private property and will not enter and conduct any metal detecting without the owner’s permission.

•I will take care to fill all holes and excavations.

•I will pick up and dispose of any and all trash that I find.

•I will appreciate and protect our inheritance of natural resources, wildlife, and private property.

•I will build fires in designated or safe places only.

•I will not tamper with signs, structural facilities, or equipment.

•I will be respectful of buildings, structures, edifices, or whatever remains of ghost towns or abandoned places.

•I will leave gates as found.

•I will use thoughtfulness, courtesy, and consideration at all times and keep in mind that I represent my hobby when I am out in the field.

The metal detectorist’s code of ethics and the many variations found all over stem from the FMDAC’s published code. Although each club, site, or entity put their own spin on it, the essence remains the same, we all want to be responsible metal detectorists and good ambassadors for this hobby we love.
